Who doesn't love a classic red barn in any season? This handsome gem "Had me at Hello" with the lush vine growing along the side. Tucked between a grove of trees and a field of harvested corn the striking bold red contrasts against the empty blue sky. 

 

Bring back a blown out or empty sky by adding depth with a classic vignette and texture.

Walnut Grove Farm

Every Autumn Walnut Grove Farm open it's gates to hundreds of visitors. During Autumn the farm hosts a farmers market, horseback and horse drawn carriage rides, and a petting zoo.  Than barn pictured below is over 150 years old and in it you will find a cafe and a variety of artisans, craftsmen, and musicians on featured weekends. The Country: On the Outskirts

I discovered this weathered American beauty on road trip. It was just on the outskirts of rural town near border of Illinois and Missouri. The Country: Tattered Bones

This relic is tucked away and most often unseen. I spotted a glimpse of after visiting a local farmer's market. I had to drive back with my camera gear the weekend after. The exposed bones of the barn make it quite intriguing. There is corn planted in front barn, making it a bit difficult to get to. I didn't venture inside since it isn't likely very stable. Although, I certainly wanted too.

The Country: Under the Canopy

This barn sits tucked under the canopy at the end of a field in front of a hillside on our winding road home. It looks much smaller than it is in this photo, because the trees and hill are so tall. If you look closely the below you will see a white door on the front to help put it in perspective. The top didn't come out sharp, so I just played with texture in the blown out sky.

Photoshop Tutorial:

Clouds Sunrise #3 Texture / Multiply Blending Mode / 65%

Apply a layer mask to the cloud texture. Using a soft round brush, brush away texture from all areas except the sky.

The Country: Woodford Plateau

Above the Illinois river bed, bluffs rise into rolling hills. Atop the hills is a plateau covered in a patchwork of fields, pastures, farm roads, and weathered barns.

The Country: County Roads

What is one of my favorite ways to spend the weekend? Getting lost or at least trying to down the rural county roads. I found this weathered and worn barn doing just that! It obiviously is out of work and the farmer planted a crop of the beans around it. I tend to stay out of farmer's fields unless it's not planted or it's already been harvested. So, I didn't get a look inside this barn although, it's probably not safe to inside. So, I got down as close as possible to the barn, right on the edge of the field to photograph it.

The Country: Green Acres

I love the mix of old and new on this barn. At first glance you see a barn stripped of paint and worn by weather and time. With a closer look you will see new white metal roof and windows. Altogether is makes a beautiful setting on the country green acres.

2. In the layers palette, set the blending mode to soft light
3. Lower the opacity of the texture to 65%

Sun-bleached Recipe:

1. bleach your image with the antique cool texture blended on linear burn with a 60% opacity
2. add song to the wind with the windsong texture blended on soft light
3. warm your edges with the worn paper texture blended on soft light at 50% opacity

Recipe: 

1. tack on the breath warm texture and blend to linear burn
2. adjust the opacity to between 15 and 20 percent
3. smooth on a layer of the mr. smith texture and blend to darker color
4. lower opacity to 35 percent and apply a layer mask to brush away texture from your subject

1. add the autumn sunrise 4 texture to your image
2. set the blending mode to linear burn
3. add the cinnamon texture on top of the first texture
4. set the blending mode of this layer to soft light
5. lower the opacity of top layer to 70%

Weekend Texture Twist

Congrats to last week's Texture Twist Winner - Andrea author of Rural Revial! She entered pink tulips with a beautiful paint like texture.

This barn rest along the river bluff on route 100.  Growing up, we would pass by it on our way to bring home groceries and fabric.  My mom rarely let's a day pass without sewing, hence the fabric. I hadn't seen this barn in almost a decade.  I was pleased to see it's still in use and with a new fence around it.

Weekend Texture Twist

Congrats to last week's Texture Twist Winner - Nancy author of A Rural Journal! Nancy also has something beautiful to share. She lives on a farm in Nebraska. I was out on a photography shoot and drove past this withered barn. Of course I had stop and photography it's skeleton roof and winding vines.  I soon discovered it to be a hawk's roost!

To give the sky more depth I added the antique cool texture, blended on darker color at 35% opacity.

Photo Touch Up: Windsong

I photographed this farm while out shooting maternity portraits. To be honest I was actually treading back and forth in the grass to get cow manure off my boots.  I got some great shots of couple, cow manure and all! Touch Up Technique:

1. Stamp on a layer of the hurricane warm texture blend on multiply at 60%
2. Add the dreamsicle texture blended on color, lower the opacity for just the right amount of warm
